Our Purpose

Every child deserves a strong start. Every family deserves a strong foundation.

The Foundation for Strengthening Families (FSF) is a nonprofit organization based in St. Louis, Missouri, dedicated to addressing the racial and economic inequities that affect families’ health, education, and long-term stability. We believe that when mothers and children receive support from the very beginning—through access to healthy living, quality childcare, and community resources—they can build strong, thriving lives that ripple through generations.

FSF’s work spans prenatal care, early childhood education, and essential family resources. Each initiative is guided by evidence-based practices, professional expertise, and deep relationships within the communities we serve. Together, we are dismantling systemic barriers and building pathways of promise.

Our Mission and values

Mission

Our Core Values

Core values description based on pillars below

Knowledge opens doors to a brighter future. FSF believes that when parents and children are equipped with the tools to learn and grow, they can break cycles of inequity. Through our early learning centers and parenting programs, we cultivate curiosity, confidence, and lifelong learning.

Families can only thrive when their basic needs are met. From diapers and food to mental health and wellness resources, FSF ensures families have access to essential support—so they can focus on building stability, not surviving scarcity.

High-quality childcare should never depend on a ZIP code. Our Good Shepherd Early Learning Centers provide safe, nurturing environments where every child—especially Black boys—can be affirmed, inspired, and prepared for success in school and life.

The Challenge We Address

The preschool-to-prison pipeline is a harsh reality for many children growing up in under-resourced communities—especially young Black boys. FSF begins where the problem starts: supporting mothers and children before birth and continuing that support through the critical early years of development. By providing prenatal education, essential resources, and culturally responsive early learning opportunities, we replace the cycle of poverty with a Preschool-to-Promise Pathway.

Our Programs

At the heart of our work lies a commitment to strengthening families, nurturing healthy beginnings, and building pathways of promise for children across Missouri. Each of our programs is designed to meet families where they are—providing support, education, and resources that promote long-term well-being.

Educating and empowering Black mothers through nutrition, mental health, and breastfeeding support during pregnancy and infancy.

We are creating generational change

From equipping new mothers with the tools for healthy pregnancies to transforming the early learning experience for Black boys, our initiatives embody the belief that every child deserves a strong, supported start in life. Together, these programs form a holistic network of care that uplifts entire communities—one family at a time.

The FSF Footprint

FSF serves the Hamilton Heights, Wells-Goodfellow, and West End neighborhoods of North St. Louis City—areas that have faced decades of disinvestment and segregation. Within these communities, we collaborate directly with residents, listening to their needs and co-creating programs that foster lasting change.

Our reach now extends beyond the city, with new programs supporting families in rural Missouri communities such as Warrenton. By combining urban and rural perspectives, FSF develops holistic solutions that uplift families across the region.
