Transforming Families.
Empowering Futures.

Our programs work hand in hand to strengthen the health, education, and resilience of families in under-resourced communities—building the foundation for lifelong success.

At the Foundation for Strengthening Families (FSF), we believe that breaking cycles of poverty begins by investing early—in mothers, children, and the communities that support them.

Our programs are built around three pillars of service:

Our Approach

Maternal Health for Black Moms

Reducing racial disparities in maternal and infant mortality by providing education, resources, and emotional support.

Early Childhood Education for Black Boys

Creating culturally responsive, trauma-informed environments that prepare boys for lifelong learning and success.

Concrete Support for Families in Need

Ensuring families have access to food, diapers, and other essential resources to ease daily financial stress.

Programs at a Glance

Healthy Start

Supporting Black Mothers Through Education and Care

Healthy Start provides comprehensive health and nutrition education, mental wellness support, and community connection for Black mothers. Through monthly sessions, participants learn about pregnancy nutrition, breastfeeding, emotional wellness, and infant development. The program supplies resources, childcare, transportation, and breastfeeding kits to help mothers put what they learn into practice.

Young Boys Healthy Start

Building Emotional Wellness and Resilience in Early Childhood

This behavioral health initiative helps young Black boys ages 3–5 develop emotional awareness and positive coping skills. Guided by mental health professionals, weekly sessions engage both children and caregivers in trauma-informed strategies rooted in the Conscious Discipline model.

Clean & Dry Baby

Meeting Basic Needs with Dignity

In partnership with the St. Louis Area Diaper Bank, FSF distributes thousands of diapers and baby essentials each year to help families meet the most basic needs of their infants. By relieving financial strain, families can redirect resources toward health, stability, and growth.

Good Shepherd Early Learning Center (North St. Louis City)

High-Quality Early Learning Rooted in Community

Founded in 2009, Good Shepherd Early Learning Center provides trusted, high-quality early education to children in North St. Louis. The facility includes a lactation room, therapy and literacy labs, and an upcoming nature playground—all designed to nurture the whole child.

Good Shepherd Academy for Boys (Opening Fall 2026)

The Nation’s First Preschool Dedicated to Black Boys

This groundbreaking academy will provide a nurturing, culturally affirming environment where preschool-aged Black boys can grow academically, socially, and emotionally. The curriculum emphasizes literacy, play-based learning, emotional regulation, and representation through Black male educators.

Each FSF program is designed around three core goals:

OUR METHOD: A HOLISTIC MODEL FOR IMPACT

1. Education That Empowers

We provide knowledge and resources that equip parents and children to make informed choices, from prenatal nutrition to early childhood learning.

2. Support That Sustains

Every program includes practical supports—childcare, transportation, meals, and access to essentials—to ensure that participation is possible for every family.

3. Community That Connects

Our initiatives build bridges across neighborhoods, fostering connection, resilience, and shared responsibility. Families leave not only with information, but with a network of support.

“Our goal is not simply to serve families—but to strengthen them. When mothers are supported and children are nurtured, entire communities are transformed.”
